So I won’t have to…
The cry from the cross had to be the most gut-wrenching, soul stirring, frightening cry ever heard. After Jesus had been brutally beaten, spit upon, mocked, ridiculed, and was hanging with no dignity for all to see, and many to make fun of, He was able to muster enough strength to throw his head back and cry in a loud voice, “My God! My God! Why have you forsaken me?!” Imagine the heart break of God as He had to turn His back on His only Son as His only Son bore the sins of the world. My sins and yours.
Why? Why did Jesus bear such agony? Why did He endure the most horrific death ever to be endured? Why did He cry, “My God! My God! Why have you forsaken me?!” So you and I won’t have to.
“At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?’ (which means ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’)” (Mark 15:33 & 34).
